Ship carrying stolen Ukrainian grain denied unloading in Turkey after rejection in Israel
The Turkish government has refused to allow the Greek bulk carrier Panormitis, which was transporting grain allegedly stolen by Russia from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, to enter its port, according to Israel Hayom.
On April 30, the vessel was denied unloading at the Israeli port of Haifa after Israeli wheat importer Zenziper canceled its contract upon learning about the cargo’s alleged illegal origin. The ship subsequently left the port and headed to Iskenderun, Turkey.
The Panormitis arrived at the Turkish port on May 13. However, its request to dock appears to have been rejected by Ankara. As of Monday, AIS data indicated that the vessel was located near the Turkish–Syrian maritime border, close to Latakia or Tartus.
The issue of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” used to transport grain from occupied Ukrainian territories, has been discussed during Ukrainian–Turkish political consultations.
Following high-level contacts between Ankara and Kyiv, the bulk carrier was also denied permission to unload in Turkey.
