Serbia’s 2024 wheat output drops 16%

The harvested area decreased to 549,032 hectares in 2024, from 682,246 hectares in 2023, the statistical office said in a statement on Wednesday.

This year’s yield, however, increased to 5.3 tonnes per hectare, up from 5.1 tonnes per hectare last year, the statement read.

In 2023, Serbia harvested 3.449 million tonnes of wheat, up 11% compared to 2022, according to earlier released statistics data.

This year’s maize production is expected to come in at 5.425 million tonnes, down 18% over the previous year, according to Wednesday’s statement. The harvested maize area is expected to increase to 961,268 hectares from 922,980 hectares in 2023, while the yield per hectare is expected to fall to 5.6 tonnes per hectare from 7.2 tonnes per hectare last year.

Compared to the 2014-2023 ten-year average, wheat production rose 2.4% this year, while maize production fell by 15%.

Final crop data will be published in March 2025.
