Rumors about the opening of the Chinese market for Ukrainian peas will increase the area under crops
The mere rumors that China will provide access to its market for Ukrainian peas are already provoking an increase in the area under this crop in Ukraine.
This was reported by Liza Malyshko, Director of Market Research at UkrAgroConsult, during the Black Sea Grain 2024 conference.
“We expect the area under peas to increase this year. If, for example, last year it was 150 thou hectares, this year it will increase to 160-170 thou hectares. We will see a bigger reaction and expansion of the area next year, when we finally get access to the Chinese market,” said Liza Malyshko.
She added that this will allow farmers to switch, for example, from corn to more promising crops.
According to Liza Malyshko, Russia received the permission to export peas to China in September 2023 and as of the beginning of April has already shipped 855 thsd tonnes.
“That is, Russia instantly became a key supplier of peas to this market, and it provided profit to Russian farmers,” the analyst said.
