Romania has replaced Ukraine as the main supplier of rapeseed to Germany
German farmers harvested more rapeseed in 2025 than in the previous year. Despite the increase in domestic supply, rapeseed imports remain high in the first half of the 2025/26 season. Exports to date also exceed the volumes of the previous year, reports the German Union for the Promotion of Oilseeds and Grains (UFOP).
Germany imported about 3.1 million tonnes of rapeseed in the first half of the season, up more than 4% compared to the same period the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Romania, supplying 873 thousand tons, replaced Ukraine as the most important supplier of rapeseed to Germany.
The increase in imports is likely due to a significantly larger harvest, as Romania more than doubled production from the previous year, setting a new record. Ukraine supplied about 752 thousand tons, which is 39% less than in the same period of the previous year. The reason for the reduction in rapeseed imports was, among other things, the introduction by Ukraine of export duties on rapeseed and soybeans, which reduced the supply of raw materials to the union markets. Supplies from France increased by 64%, to 477 thousand tons, the Netherlands more than doubled their volumes. Canada has cut supplies.
Earlier it became known that the import of rapeseed from Ukraine to the EU since the beginning of the season showed a decrease of 43%, oil exports are forecast to show an increase of 2.7 times.
Germany is the EU’s largest net importer of rapeseed and exports were relatively low despite a larger harvest, totaling just 64 thousand tonnes.
