Romania expects record wheat harvest this year
Romania is expecting a record wheat harvest this year as abundant spring rains should help it recover from last year’s drought-hit harvest, analysts and the agriculture ministry said, Reuters reported.
Drought and heat last summer damaged crops in Romania and elsewhere in Europe, with corn and sunflower seeds particularly affected. But regular rains this season, particularly in April and May, have helped ease the drought.
Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu said earlier last week he expected a wheat harvest of 14-15 million tonnes.
Cesar Gheorghe of Romanian grain market consultancy AGRIColumn told Reuters on Friday he expected a harvest of 13-13.3 million tonnes, the highest in the country’s history, surpassing the record harvest of 2021.
Romania harvested 9.29 million tons of wheat in 2024, 3.5% less than the previous year.
