In autumn seeding Romanian farmers decided to bet more on barley, as not very demanding and safe crop, as well as on rapeseed, which is more demanding, but highly profitable commodity. Many of farmers risked planting more rapeseed for the first time at the expense of lower corn area in the coming spring, changing their usual crop structure.
According to farmers, recent precipitations favored the crop development of both winter grains and oilseeds. So far, there were no strong frosts, which could damage rapeseed. The crop is adapting to winter in good conditions.
Also, agronomists say that recovery of soil moisture during winter gives better pre-conditions for seeding of spring crops, including sunseed and corn, which otherwise may soon lose their share in Romanian crop structure. Last week the government directed more funds (about EUR 24.5 M) for further modernization of irrigation system, which should gradually lower the weather risks for Romanian spring crops.
European Union scientists confirmed that 2024 will be the warmest year in history after 2023. In the opinion of Romanian farmers, this tendency needs more attention of the new Romanian government, which should implement more long-term projects for Romanian agricultural sector.
