The export of sunflower seeds from Ukraine in 2021/22 MY reached unprecedented volumes and exceeded 1.6 million tons (a 10-fold increase compared to 2020/21 MY). This is stated in the message of the association “Ukroliyaprom”.

As noted, the main importers were EU countries — more than 70%, Turkey — more than 20%, Moldova — 5%.

“The 2021/22 FY was predicted to be one of the most successful for the oil and fat complex of Ukraine, based on the record harvest of sunflower seeds in 2021 (16.4 million tons) and the harvest of the main types of oilseeds as a whole to more than 23 million tons. Production volume sunflower oil was also forecast at a record level of 7.2-7.3 million tons, exports – up to 7.0 million tons. However, the large-scale aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, destroyed all forecasts,” – note in associations

Among the peculiarities of the 2021/22 MY, experts also include the increase in the processing of rapeseed (in the period July-December 2021), the expansion of the range of oil-extracting enterprises that have joined the processing of this raw material. During this period, 26,000 tons of rapeseed oil were produced under Davalnytskyi conditions from rapeseed imported to Ukraine, which is about 70,000 tons.

The blockade of the ports of the Black and Azov seas led to the suspension of the export of sunflower oil and meal and, as a consequence for the export-oriented industry, to the suspension of many enterprises in the regions of Ukraine. Also, the oil sector had to form new logistics chains.

“The reorientation of exports to transportation by other modes of transport, in particular by rail, has significantly changed the geography of sunflower oil and meal export. In March-August 2022, EU countries became the main importing countries — more than 60%. In terms of countries, the situation has changed somewhat, and the first places were taken by: Poland — up to 20%, Bulgaria and Romania — up to 10%,” the association adds.
