The oilseed market in the Black Sea–Danube region is entering a new phase of expansion and structural change. UkrAgroConsult highlights that production growth is accelerating while competition across export markets is intensifying.

In the 2026/27 season, oilseed area is expected to increase to about 35.2 M ha, while production may rise to 71.5 M mt, creating a new record and raising pressure on margins.

Sunflower remains the dominant crop, accounting for around 72% of global production in the region, reinforcing its strategic importance but also increasing exposure to global competition.

At the same time, soybean and rapeseed segments show mixed dynamics, with soybean area declining and rapeseed expanding moderately, reflecting shifting economics and policy impacts.

UkrAgroConsult notes that market outcomes will increasingly depend on weather conditions, processing capacity, and access to export destinations rather than just production volumes.

Production growth dynamics illustrate steady expansion in oilseed output alongside structural changes in crop composition. Crop structure distribution reflects increasing dominance of sunflower and gradual adjustments in soybean and rapeseed shares. Trade flow schemes highlight shifting export priorities toward specific regions and intensifying competition between key exporters.

Key trends

  • Oilseed area expands driven by higher margins and demand for processing
  • Competition intensifies across export destinations especially in sunflower oil markets
  • Margins depend more on logistics processing and policy than on crop size alone
  • Weather risks increasingly define production outcomes and price volatility
  • Trade flows become more regionalized while global competition remains strong
