Prices for rapeseed in Paris remain high, but they are under pressure from falling prices for canola in Canada

In the absence of escalation between Iran and Israel, oil prices during the week fell by 8.2%, which increased pressure on the quotations of biofuels and vegetable oils, although the price of rapeseed in Paris remained high.

on Friday on the Paris MATIF November futures for rapeseed rose by 1% to 501 €/t or 544 $/t (+0.4% for the week, +7.6% for the month), and February – by 1.2% to 505,75 €/t (+0.2% for the week, +8% for the month).

November canola futures on the Winnipeg Stock Exchange during the week traded at 616 CAD/t or 446 $/t (+4.8% for the month).

Dry and warm weather in Canada allowed to complete the harvesting of canola without losses, so the crop estimates can be increased.

Due to the depreciation of the euro and the Canadian dollar against the US dollar, canola prices are already $100/t lower than European rapeseed, which contributes to the increase in canola supplies from Canada to the EU.

Currently, Canada accounts for 23% of global production and 47% of global exports of rapeseed. China remains one of the largest markets for Canadian canola. However, over the past 4 years, Canada has reduced canola exports and increased processing.

According to the European Commission, in 2024/25 MY (as of October 12), the EU increased the imports of rapeseed by 12% to 1.57 mln tonnes compared to the same period of the previous season, of which 70.7% or 1.1 mln tonnes were supplied from Ukraine, 22.5% or 352 thsd tonnes – from Australia, and no deliveries from Canada.

In Ukraine, the export purchase price of rapeseed in the ports of the black sea for the week increased by 200-300 UAH/t to 23900-24200 UAH/t or 500-510 $/t, but the volume of proposals is reduced, so traders can stop purchases due to the inability to form large parties, which will reduce the purchase price.

On October 14, winter rapeseed in Ukraine sown 1 million hectares or 91% of the planned area (1.1 million hectares in the same period last year), but the lack of rainfall and lower temperatures in the coming weeks will negatively affect the development of crops.
