Oats have lately become an increasingly attractive grain crop for Ukrainian farmers. Its advantages include low growing costs and strengthening demand from both internal consumers (looking for healthier nutrition) and external ones. As a result, oat price is on the rise.

Ukraine is the world’s seventh biggest oat exporter in MY 2020/21, though it was the fourth-ranked back in MY 2015/16. The volume of exports varies from year to year, depending on the crop and external demand from traditional markets. So, oat exports rose sharply in MY 2014/15 after opening the Indian market and due to increasing demand from Pakistan. The shipments fell in 2017-2019 amid a production decline.

The main export destinations include India, the EU, and Pakistan. In MY 2020/21, Pakistan’s share in Ukrainian oat exports expanded to 14% (at the expense of India and the EU) due to a drop in own wheat production.

In view of the current weather conditions (sufficient soil moisture), UkrAgroConsult supposes the crop can be expected to be as large as last year, especially if the final area turns out to be above expectations. With steady external demand, 2021/22 export potential may remain similar to last year.
