NCGAidentifies three new growth areas to boost US corn demand
The U.S. National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) has unveiled a strategy to expand demand for American corn by identifying three high-potential sectors that could generate additional demand of more than 11 bln bushels annually. The initiative aims to support farmers, who are expected to face their fourth consecutive unprofitable season in 2026.
According to the NCGA, the greatest opportunities lie in marine biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and biobased products. The association estimates that supplying just 10% of the global marine fuel market with corn-based ethanol could create additional demand for 3 bln bushels of corn per year. Another 1.7 bln bushels could come from SAF production using ethanol-to-jet technology.
The largest growth potential is seen in the biochemicals industry. Replacing petroleum-based feedstocks with corn in just 10% of global biochemicals and plastics production could generate an additional 6.6 bln bushels of annual corn demand. NCGA noted that continued advances in plant breeding, farming technologies, and agricultural equipment will enable U.S. growers to meet this future demand.
The report also highlights the importance of expanding the domestic biofuel market. NCGA is calling for year-round nationwide access to E15 gasoline while supporting expanded U.S. corn exports, the extension of the USMCA trade agreement, and the development of new international export markets.
NCGA President Jed Bower said corn should become a key component of the United States’ energy transition. According to him, expanding new uses for corn will not only create additional market opportunities for farmers but also strengthen the country’s energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and support long-term demand for U.S. corn.
