Namibia launches world’s first marine phosphate mining project for fertilizer production
The Namibian government has granted environmental approval for the Sandpiper project, which will involve commercial phosphate mining from the ocean floor. The project, developed by Namibian Marine Phosphate (NMP), is described as the world’s first commercial project of its kind and could create a new source of phosphate feedstock for agricultural fertilizer production.
Mining is planned in the Atlantic Ocean about 120 km southwest of Walvis Bay, at depths of 180–300 metres. Specialized vessels will dredge phosphate deposits from the seabed. The licence has been granted for 20 years, with planned production capacity of around 3 mln tons of phosphate concentrate per year.
The launch of Sandpiper could have implications for the global fertilizer market, as phosphate rock is a key raw material for phosphate fertilizer production. Until now, commercial phosphate mining has been concentrated mainly on land-based deposits, while similar offshore projects in several countries have failed to secure approval due to environmental concerns.
Environmental impacts have become the main source of controversy surrounding the Namibian project. Mining will take place within the highly productive Benguela Current ecosystem, which is important for commercial fisheries. Fishing industry representatives and environmental groups fear that seabed dredging could disturb sediments and negatively affect marine ecosystems.
NMP, however, says mining over the project’s 20-year lifespan will affect only about 0.002% of Namibia’s continental shelf, while generating new revenues and jobs for the country. If successfully implemented, Sandpiper could set an important precedent for developing marine phosphate resources and diversifying the global raw material base for fertilizer production.
