MPOB’s Palm Oil Innovations Revolutionize Animal Feed Production and Boost Economic Benefits

Source:  BNN Breaking

Malaysian Palm Oil Board’s (MPOB) groundbreaking achievements have revolutionized the oil palm industry with the development of 714 technologies, 233 of which have been successfully commercialized and integrated into local industries.

Among these technologies are palm-based food formulations such as Mozzarella cheese analogue, which showcase the versatility of palm oil. However, one of the most impactful innovations is the feed pellet formulation for beef cattle.

This feed pellet formulation contains over 80% palm-based ingredients, including palm kernel cake, empty fruit bunch, and crude palm oil. By utilizing these locally sourced materials, the cost of animal feed production is significantly reduced without compromising nutritional value.

The Minister of Plantation and Commodities recently paid a visit to the MPOB to understand their research and development efforts in the oil palm industry. During the visit, the minister was introduced to their margarine pilot plant, advanced biotechnology and breeding center (ABBC), and oil palm gallery.

ABBC houses the world’s largest oil palm germplasm collection center, serving as a source for superior oil palm materials production through breeding or tissue culture. MPOB’s margarine pilot plant and laboratory facilities provide research and development expertise in manufacturing fat-based food products.

The palm-based feed pellet formulation for beef cattle can potentially reduce Malaysia’s import of animal feed by at least 10%, leading to substantial economic benefits for the country. Moreover, the use of oil palm waste for organic fertilizer and animal feed contributes to environmental management by promoting the reuse of waste materials.

The growth of the crude palm oil manufacturing industry in Indonesia, particularly in Riau province, has resulted in economic transformation and sustainability in the sector. The positive impact on the regional economy is evident through job creation and increased income for farming communities. The oil palm industry’s potential for oil-derived products is promising, further solidifying its role in the global market.

In conclusion, the development of oil palm technology offers a cost-effective alternative for animal feed production. By utilizing locally sourced materials and waste products, the industry is not only reducing import costs but also promoting sustainable practices. As the lines between technology and humanity continue to blur, the oil palm industry stands as a testament to the power of innovation and adaptation.
