Morocco increased grain imports by 16%
Morocco imported 4,106,900 tons of grain from June 1 to October 31, 2024, 16% more than the same period last year, according to the National Federation of Grain and Pulses Traders (FNCL). This was reported by Les Inspirations Eco.
Imports of durum wheat amounted to 363.3 thousand tons (+69% compared to last season), soft flour wheat – 1,953.1 thousand tons (+15%).
Compared to the last season, the volumes of imports of forage raw materials – soybean meal, beet pulp, sunflower meal, wheat bran and rapeseed meal – also increased. Total imports of feed raw materials increased by 18%, amounting to 1,040 thousand tons.
The Kingdom’s own grain production continues to fall, spurring imports. Moroccan farmers are now facing a particularly difficult situation due to severe water shortages. Due to a string of dry years, the Kingdom is being forced to rethink its approach to food security.
“We continue to purchase produce at the same price level. However, import refunds are still provided by the government. On the other hand, the price may have a downward trend due to sufficient supply in the world market. Moreover, we are waiting for the harvest from South America which may weaken the prices,” explained Omar Yacoubi, president of FNCL.
FNCL emphasizes that soft wheat imports are almost at the same level of 450,000 tons per month. Soft wheat stocks in the country now amount to 1,575,000 tons, which covers the domestic demand for 3.5 months.
