Market rapeseed production to reach historic high – IGC

In its latest forecast, the International Grains Council (IGC) estimated global rapeseed area at 44.1 million hectares. This is 0.2 million hectares more than in the current MY 2025/26. According to the forecast, a slight decline in rapeseed area is expected in major exporting countries, while moderate growth is expected in other regions, particularly in Asia.

In the EU, rapeseed area is forecast to remain stable at 6.1 million hectares. However, a bumper 2025 harvest, particularly in Southeastern Europe and especially in Romania, may encourage producers to expand their area. A slight decline in rapeseed area is expected in other member countries.

Acreage in Russia is expected to remain stable at 3 million hectares throughout the year following a significant expansion of plantings this season. At the same time, according to a study by the German Union for the Promotion of Oilseed and Grain Cultivation (UFOP), the area sown to rapeseed in Ukraine is likely to decrease by 100,000 hectares to 1.3 million hectares. Overall, in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), rapeseed acreage is projected to reach the second-highest level since record-keeping began, underscoring the growing importance of rapeseed as an agricultural crop.

IGC forecasts for leading exporters, Canada and Australia, remain particularly uncertain, as sowing there is still several months away. Given expected strong international demand, rapeseed acreage in Canada is likely to remain close to last year’s average of 8.7 million hectares. Analysts expect rapeseed acreage in Australia to remain flat at 3.4 million hectares, at last year’s level.
