Market prices will help to increase the area under pulses in Ukraine

Pulses are very interesting for farmers, because they are now at good prices, and they can continue to grow. The only thing is that there may be problems with pea, chickpea, and lentil seeds in Ukraine.
Antonina Sklyarenko, president of the Community of Producers and Consumers of Pulses of Ukraine, spoke about this during the Agro&Food Security Forum, which is held in Warsaw under the auspices of the “Community of Producers and Consumers of Pulses of Ukraine” and the “UkrAgroConsult” agency.
“Unfortunately, there are not enough chickpea and lentil seeds in Ukraine. This year there was even an FAO program to provide farmers with pea seeds. Pulses are now very interesting for farmers also because they saturate the soil with nitrogen, and this reduces the need to apply nitrogen fertilizers, which is currently a problem,” says Antonina Sklyarenko.
According to her, this year, thanks to favorable weather conditions, Ukrainian farmers harvested a good crop of pulses: beans – 22-23 t/ha, peas – 3 t/ha, chickpeas – 2 t/ha.
“Therefore, we hope that next year farmers will increase the area sown under pulses. Now the price of chickpeas is $1,000/t, and it is interesting for producers. In addition, chickpeas, like all pulses, can be exported by machines, this is possible for Ukraine,” Antonina Sklyarenko emphasized.
