Latvia extends ban on purchasing Russian grain
Latvia has extended its ban on grain and feed imports from Russia and Belarus until July 1, 2027, as stipulated by amendments to the Law on Agriculture and Rural Development.
The ban was previously scheduled to expire in July 2026.
Latvia introduced it in March 2024. The ban does not apply to transit and deliveries to other EU countries.
The Latvian Ministry of Agriculture noted that agricultural imports from the aforementioned countries have significantly declined. From Russia, they fell by 30% in the first 11 months of 2024 and by a further 85% in the first 11 months of 2025. Imports from Belarus, meanwhile, fell by 12% and 55%, respectively. A similar trend is observed across the EU as a whole.
At the same time, the country continues to purchase goods from Russia such as sunflower husks and beet pulp with molasses. These are needed to feed horses and other livestock.
