Iraq purchases more than 3.1 mln tons of new-crop domestic wheat
Iraq continues to strengthen its grain reserves through domestic procurement. According to the General Company for Grain Trade, the government has purchased 3.194 million tonnes of wheat from local farmers since the start of the current marketing season.
The wheat procurement campaign began in April and is scheduled to continue until mid-July. Authorities aim to secure stable domestic grain supplies and further enhance the country’s food security through increased local production.
The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture previously projected wheat production for the 2025/26 season at up to 5 million tonnes. The forecast is supported by an expansion in cultivated area, with approximately 8 million dunams of farmland planted across the country.
Iraq has been pursuing a long-term strategy to reduce its dependence on wheat imports. Improved weather conditions and higher rainfall have also helped replenish water reservoirs after several years of drought and declining river flows, supporting the outlook for domestic agricultural production.
