Iraq is preparing to open a new overland route for crude oil exports through Syria to Mediterranean ports. The corridor is intended to help partially bypass the Strait of Hormuz, where risks to tanker shipping remain high.

The Iraqi government has already asked Syria to facilitate crude oil transit in addition to existing fuel oil shipments. According to Youssef Kiblawi, head of Syria’s state oil company, a bilateral agreement is in the final stage of approval.

Shipments are expected to move by truck convoys to Mediterranean ports, including Banias, where the crude oil can be loaded onto tankers. The first deliveries could begin by mid-October.

The new route is aimed at reducing Iraq’s dependence on the Strait of Hormuz amid continued attacks on vessels and elevated insurance and logistics risks. Despite a partial recovery in crude oil flows through the strait, shipping risks remain significant.

The development of an alternative corridor through Syria could strengthen the role of Mediterranean ports in regional energy logistics. It would also give Iraq more options to diversify crude oil exports as the country plans to significantly increase production in the coming years.
