Iran is discussing with Oman the creation of a permanent toll for passage through the Strait of Hormuz
Iran is in talks with Oman about a possible permanent system of charging ships for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the key shipping routes for global oil supplies.
Iran’s ambassador to France, Mohammad Amin-Nejad, said this in an interview with Bloomberg.
According to him, Iran and Oman should “mobilize resources” to ensure shipping safety and effective traffic management in the region. He noted that such measures will require funding, so companies using the route should participate in its maintenance.
“If there is a desire to improve the situation today, it is necessary to find a solution to eliminate the root of the problem,” the diplomat said.
At the same time, the idea of introducing a fee was sharply criticized by US President Donald Trump. In comments to reporters at the White House on May 21, he emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open and free for shipping.
“We want it open, we want it free, we don’t want to pay for passage,” Trump said.
Separately, Iran’s ambassador said the country was not blocking the strait completely. He said 26 tankers and other vessels had recently passed through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He also noted that before the war, about 135 ships passed through this route every day.
