India’s Department of Consumer Affairs is exploring the possibility of introducing standard pack sizes for vegetable oils. The initiative follows concerns raised by industry associations over the wide variety of packaging formats in the retail market, which makes price comparison difficult for consumers.

According to the department, the proposal is being examined under possible amendments to the Legal Metrology framework aimed at standardising packaging sizes for edible oils. The issue was discussed during consultations with key industry organisations.

The meeting included associations representing around 90% of India’s vegetable oil market. Industry participants, including producers and processors of oilseeds, highlighted that the large number of pack sizes in retail trade creates confusion for consumers and complicates informed purchasing decisions.

Currently, the market offers dozens of different pack sizes ranging from 650 grams to 870 grams. According to industry stakeholders, such closely varying weights can mislead consumers and make it harder to identify the most cost-effective option.

The government stated that any potential changes would apply equally to both domestically produced and imported vegetable oils. No final decision has been made yet, as the proposal remains under review, with authorities emphasizing the goal of improving price transparency and strengthening consumer protection.
