Heavy rains wash away freshly planted crops in UK
Rainfall at levels described by one farmer-landowner as “biblical” has washed away freshly planted crops and flooded granaries in many parts of the UK, with farms in England among the worst affected by last weekend’s deluge.
After a week of near-perfect sowing conditions, the volume and intensity of the weekend’s rainfall was catastrophic for many farmers.
Andrew Robinson, who farms 1,200ha of land in the Toddington area of Bedfordshire, sowed a third of that land with wheat and barley last week, but after the 103-143mm of rainfall on Sunday (September 22) he expects the crops to fail.
Despite the dire situation, some farmers have benefited from the rains. For example, sugar beet growers in the east of England.
