Global SAF prices rise 10% as demand outpaces supply

Global prices for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) increased by 10% in 2026 compared to the previous year. According to BloombergNEF’s latest survey, the average SAF price reached $1,817/t, about five times higher than the price of conventional jet fuel.

Analysts say the increase was driven by higher conventional jet fuel prices following shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as stronger demand in markets with SAF blending mandates. The UK and the European Union introduced a 2% SAF blending requirement in 2025, further supporting demand.

The most affordable SAF remains fuel produced via the HEFA pathway, averaging $1,817/t. Advanced bio-SAF made from waste feedstocks averaged $3,399/t, while synthetic e-SAF, produced from hydrogen and carbon dioxide, averaged $5,015/t—nearly seven times the price of conventional jet fuel.

Global SAF production totaled 1.9 mln tons in 2025, covering only 0.6% of worldwide jet fuel demand. This highlights a significant supply shortage as airlines continue to increase SAF consumption.

BloombergNEF expects SAF prices to continue rising in the coming years as blending mandates expand, competition for feedstocks with the road transport sector intensifies, and production capacity grows more slowly than demand.
