Global rice prices drop to lowest since 2017
Prices for benchmark Thai rice fell in July 2025 to their lowest level since April 2017, reaching $392 per ton, according to World Bank data. This decline is driven by an oversupply in the global market following the removal of export restrictions by several key rice exporters, boosting available supply on international markets.
Other Thai rice varieties also saw price drops. The price of rice with up to 25% broken grains decreased by 6.4%, hitting $382 per ton, the lowest since October 2017. Crushed Thai white rice also reached its lowest level since mid-autumn 2017, falling 4.4% over the month to $376 per ton.
Vietnamese rice prices hit a multi-year low as well, with July prices at $370.6 per ton, down 1.7% from the previous month, marking the lowest since February 2020. The surge in supply stems from Vietnam’s restored exports, with 4.72 million tons shipped in the first half of 2025, surpassing Thailand as the second-largest rice exporter.
The oversupply is attributed to lifted export restrictions in countries like Thailand and India, coupled with a projected record global rice production of 543 million tons in 2025. This significantly exceeds global consumption, keeping prices down on the world market.
