Global pumpkin seed prices rise as China’s harvest declines
Global pumpkin seed prices are rising due to a significant decline in production in China, one of the key suppliers of this commodity. According to preliminary estimates, China’s Shine Skin pumpkin seed crop in 2026 could be more than 25% lower than last year. Analysts at Chelmer Foods report that limited Chinese supplies are already intensifying competition among buyers and creating conditions for further price increases.
A significant share of China’s new pumpkin seed crop has already been purchased by traders and processors building inventories for the coming months. Meanwhile, stocks held directly by farmers are gradually declining, increasing the influence of major buyers and warehouse operators on market conditions. Despite the overall upward price trend, some suppliers are still offering cheaper lots depending on their available inventories.
Supply shortages are particularly severe in the segment of pumpkin seeds that meet European Union requirements. According to Chelmer Foods, availability of such products is significantly lower than in previous years, meaning that EU-compliant seeds may command additional price premiums. Supplies of GWS pumpkin kernels are also below last year’s levels. However, weaker demand for standard GWS products could limit price increases in some market segments.
Current offers for Chinese Shine Skin pumpkin seeds of Grade A stand at approximately $2,580/t CFR EMP, while higher-quality Grade AA products are quoted at $4,260/t. Grade A GWS pumpkin kernels are offered at around $3,540/t, compared with $3,890/t for Grade AA. The considerable price differences between categories reflect variations in product quality and supply availability on the international market.
Rising fuel, international freight and agricultural input costs are adding further upward pressure on prices. According to Chelmer Foods, geopolitical uncertainty is also causing fluctuations in freight rates and making export pricing more challenging. Future market developments will depend on the actual size of China’s harvest, inventory levels held by traders and processors, and demand from European buyers. The greatest potential for further price increases remains in the segment of high-quality pumpkin seeds that comply with EU requirements.
