Forecasters warn of large-scale drought and extreme heat risks in Europe
Meteorologists are warning about a high probability of a powerful “heat dome” forming over Europe during the summer of 2026, potentially triggering prolonged heatwaves, record-breaking temperatures, and widespread drought. The greatest risks are expected in Central, Southern, and Eastern Europe, where temperatures could significantly exceed seasonal norms.
According to international weather models, one of the key drivers behind the potential extreme heat could be the development of a “Super El Niño,” which affects global atmospheric circulation. Forecasters do not rule out new temperature records above 40°C in several parts of Europe, along with persistently high nighttime temperatures.
Such weather conditions could become a major challenge for the agricultural sector. The expected moisture deficit may negatively affect yields of corn, sunflower, soybeans, and other spring crops, particularly in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Additional risks include deteriorating soil conditions and rising irrigation costs.
In the Balkans, including Bulgaria and neighboring countries, temperatures above 35°C are expected to occur frequently as early as June. After prolonged atmospheric overheating, the likelihood of severe summer storms, localized hail, and sharp weather contrasts may also increase, complicating crop development and field operations.
Climatologists note that Europe remains the fastest-warming continent in the world, while extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense. If current forecasts materialize, the summer of 2026 could become one of the hottest on record, increasing pressure on European agriculture and food markets.
