Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Turkey: livestock markets closed across the country
Turkey will close all livestock markets to control the spread of the highly contagious disease – foot-and-mouth disease.
This was reported by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture, writes Reuters.
The authorities explain this measure by the high risk of spreading the virus due to the active trade of livestock and the movement of animals after the Eid al-Adha holiday, which is accompanied by mass purchases and slaughter of animals.
The ministry said that the country continues to vaccinate animals against foot-and-mouth disease. Restrictions will be gradually lifted after the entire livestock population has been vaccinated.
The government believes that the temporary closure will not disrupt the demand and supply of meat and dairy products in Turkey.
