Experts say Algeria’s claims of a “historic” grain harvest are premature

Algerian authorities have described the 2026 season as a historic milestone for the country’s grain sector. According to preliminary estimates, durum wheat production will exceed 2.4 mln tons, while barley output is expected to surpass 900 thsd tons, which the government says will be enough to fully meet domestic demand for both crops.

However, industry analysts note that these figures remain projections, as the harvest has not yet been completed and detailed data on yields, harvested area, and final production volumes have not been released. They also stress that self-sufficiency applies only to selected crops and does not mean Algeria has eliminated its dependence on grain imports.

The strong harvest is largely attributed to abundant rainfall following several years of drought. Analysts argue that this dependence on favorable weather highlights the structural vulnerability of the country’s agricultural sector, as a less favorable season could quickly reverse the current gains.

Another challenge has been limited storage capacity. In response to the expected bumper harvest, the government has expanded grain collection centers, invested in additional storage facilities, and deployed more combine harvesters to speed up harvesting operations.

Analysts believe this year’s harvest could mark an important step forward for Algerian agriculture, but say it is too early to speak of long-term food self-sufficiency. A single favorable season is not enough to demonstrate a lasting structural transformation of the country’s agricultural sector.
