European Union approved the final trade agreement with the US
The Council of the European Union has finally adopted two regulations implementing the tariff arrangements provided for in the EU-US Joint Statement of 21 August 2025. The decision completes the legislative process and establishes new rules for bilateral trade.
The European Council announced this.
The adopted regulations provide for the elimination of the remaining EU tariffs on industrial goods from the US, as well as the introduction of preferential access for certain US seafood and non-sensitive agricultural products through tariff rate quotas and reduced duty rates.
In addition, the EU has extended the duty-free import regime for lobsters, including processed products. This decision applies to all countries in accordance with the most-favoured-nation principle.
At the same time, the regulations contain strengthened mechanisms to protect the European market. In particular, the European Commission will be able to react quickly in the event of a sharp increase in imports that could harm European producers, as well as suspend trade preferences if the US fails to meet its obligations or applies discriminatory measures.
The documents will enter into force the day after publication in the Official Journal of the EU. The basic regulation will be valid until the end of 2029, after which the European Commission will assess its impact on trade and, if necessary, propose its extension.
