European Parliament suspends approval of EU-US trade deal
The European Parliament has suspended its work on the approval of the EU-US trade agreement. This was announced by Bernd Lange, the chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade and a representative of the Social Democrats.
The reason was the latest tariff threats by US President Donald Trump against a number of EU member states.
“It is now official: the EU-US agreement is on hold until further notice. Our negotiating team has just decided to suspend the committee’s work on the legal implementation of the agreement in Thornbury,” Lange said.
He stressed that the current situation goes beyond trade relations.
“Our sovereignty and territorial integrity are at stake. ‘Business as usual’ is no longer possible,” the MEP added.
Before that, the leaders of the largest political groups in the European Parliament called for the suspension of the approval process of the agreement with the US in response to Trump’s tariff threats against certain European countries due to their position on Greenland.
