European Commission on the balance of agricultural trade

The European Commission continues to assess agricultural trade between Ukraine and the EU amid new challenges facing Ukrainian exports. In its response to a letter from the Ukrainian Grain Association, the Commission focused on the current trade conditions, export logistics and opportunities to develop alternative routes.

The revised Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, which provides updated trade concessions for Ukraine, has been in force since October 2025. According to the European Commission, available trade data confirm the balanced nature of the revised terms, including the volumes of Ukrainian wheat supplied under the relevant tariff-rate quota.

Amid the deteriorating situation in the Black Sea, significant attention is being paid to developing alternative routes for Ukrainian exports. The relevant options are being discussed with the Ukrainian authorities, including within the framework of the Solidarity Lanes initiative.

The Danube corridor is one of the areas of focus. The European Commission notes that the current challenges are primarily related to the development of export logistics. Efforts to find appropriate solutions involve cooperation between Ukraine, neighboring countries and other participants in the logistics routes.

The European Commission also reaffirmed its continued support for Ukraine’s agricultural sector and cooperation with the Ukrainian authorities. At this stage, attention is focused mainly on export logistics and alternative routes, while the Commission considers the current trade arrangements to be balanced.
