Europe introduces armored tractor concept
STEYR, part of the CNH Group, together with bullet-resistant systems experts from Mehler Protection, has developed a protected Terrus CVT tractor concept. Instead of a standard cabin, the designers installed an armored structure that meets NATO standards for crew protection in light armored vehicles. The concept was presented at Eurosatory 2026.
The armor level can be adjusted from STANAG 1 to STANAG 3 depending on customer requirements, which also simplifies the replacement of damaged components during maintenance.
According to Mehler Protection CEO Christian Waldik, the collaboration combines large-scale manufacturing capabilities with high-level protection, offering armed forces safe, flexible, and more affordable solutions even for demanding field operations.
The machine is based on a 340-horsepower platform with a continuously variable transmission. The modular vehicle is designed for military logistics, debris clearance, trench digging, and high-risk engineering tasks, including demining operations. Thanks to compatibility with various attachments, it can be equipped with blades, excavator arms, winches, and milling tools. Developers say this mass-production approach is significantly cheaper and more accessible for armies compared to low-volume specialized military engineering vehicles.
