EU sharply increases imports of US soybean meal

The EU is increasing purchases of US soybean meal amid rising prices in South America and preparations for new traceability requirements. In 2025/26, EU imports of US soybean meal rose to 547.5 thsd tons from 251.5 thsd tons a season earlier, more than doubling year-on-year.

The increase was particularly notable in the Netherlands. The country’s imports of US soybean meal climbed from 17.9 thsd tons in 2023/24 to 56.7 thsd tons in 2024/25 and 241.6 thsd tons in 2025/26. In June 2026, total EU imports of US soybean meal reached 138.3 thsd tons, compared with just 7.7 thsd tons a year earlier.

Interest in US supplies strengthened following a rise in South American prices. As of September 3, Argentine soybean meal FOB Up River for October shipment was assessed at $404.1/t, while Brazilian meal FOB Paranaguá stood at $414/t. Prices increased by 4.6% and 3.6%, respectively, over the week, improving the competitiveness of US product in the European market.

USDA has already confirmed private sales of 100 thsd tons each of US soybean meal and soybean cake to the Netherlands and Germany for delivery in 2026/27. Such purchases are unusual for the European market, which has traditionally been dominated by South American supplies. However, the region remains by far the larger exporter, with Argentina’s soybean meal exports forecast at 29.5 mln tons in 2025/26 and Brazil’s at 27 mln tons.

US supplies could receive additional support from new EU requirements for products linked to deforestation, which will strengthen soybean traceability rules. Market participants suggest that US suppliers may find it easier to demonstrate compliance, although the final impact of the new rules remains uncertain. S&P Global Energy CERA forecasts total EU soybean meal imports at 7.7 mln tons in Q4 2026.
