Ethanol exports support corn market amid early summer price decline

U.S. corn prices have come under pressure in early summer as favorable weather conditions and expectations for a large harvest weighed on the market. July corn futures fell more than 29 cents per bushel last week, reaching a contract low, while December futures also posted sharp losses.

The decline was not limited to corn. Investment funds continued to liquidate positions across the agricultural sector, pushing wheat and soybean prices to multi-month lows. Weak expectations for Chinese demand and uncertainty ahead of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s June Acreage Report have added to market pressure.

At the same time, crude oil markets remain supported by tensions in the Middle East and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Tight global oil supplies have kept energy prices elevated, improving the economics of ethanol production in the United States.

U.S. ethanol producers continue to operate at strong production levels, aided by favorable margins and robust export demand. Ethanol exports have become an important source of support for global fuel supplies amid declining crude oil inventories. In 2025, U.S. ethanol production reached a record 16.49 billion gallons, driven by higher domestic consumption and increased blending rates.

Analysts say sustained ethanol demand could provide long-term support for corn prices. However, traders remain cautious as prospects for another large U.S. corn crop and upcoming USDA production estimates continue to weigh on market sentiment.
