Egypt reduced wheat imports
This year, Egypt reduced its wheat imports by 17% compared to last year thanks to increased domestic purchases, according to Supplies Minister Sherif Farouk, Bloomberg reports.
During the procurement campaign, which ended in August, the government purchased 4 million tons of wheat from local farmers for the state fund.
The government managed to reduce its wheat import bill by $230-250 million in 2025.
Existing wheat reserves are sufficient for six months.
