Drought in India threatens sugar and biofuel production

India, the world’s second-largest sugar producer and largest consumer, is facing the risk of a reduced sugarcane harvest due to unfavorable weather conditions. Severe drought caused by a hot summer and the effects of El Niño has damaged plantations and raised concerns about declining sugar production. This poses risks to both the country’s domestic market and global trade.

The situation has been exacerbated by one of the worst monsoon seasons in 11 years. A shortage of rainfall has negatively affected sugarcane development, while crops had already suffered from excessive rainfall and pest infestations the previous year. Repeated weather disruptions are increasing financial risks for farmers and creating uncertainty over future production volumes.

Global sugar prices have risen sharply amid concerns about tightening supplies, adding to broader food inflationary pressures. The price increase has been particularly noticeable in India ahead of Hindu festivals, when demand for sweets traditionally rises. Higher prices are putting pressure on consumers, while sugar producers face the risk of raw material shortages.

A smaller sugarcane harvest could also threaten India’s plans to expand bioethanol production. Sugarcane is one of the main feedstocks for the biofuel industry, which plays an important role in the country’s strategy to reduce its dependence on imported crude oil. Reduced feedstock availability could intensify competition between sugar mills and ethanol producers.

Additional challenges include disruptions to international energy trade caused by conflicts in the Middle East and risks to maritime shipping. Under these circumstances, India is seeking to increase domestic biofuel production, but unfavorable weather conditions are limiting its ability to achieve these goals. Further developments in the sugar market will depend on a recovery in sugarcane yields and weather conditions in key producing regions.
