Colombia’s corn imports to reach 8.3 mln tons amid declining domestic production

Colombia’s corn production is forecast to decline by 6.9% to 1.4 mln tons in the MY 2026/27 due to unfavorable weather conditions associated with El Niño and low farmgate prices that discourage farmers from expanding planted areas. According to FAS USDA, despite lower domestic production, corn consumption is expected to continue growing, supporting higher imports.

Domestic corn consumption in Colombia is forecast at 9.76 mln tons, driven by gradually increasing demand from the livestock and animal feed industries. Meanwhile, food, seed and industrial use is expected to remain stable. Corn imports are projected to rise by 1.2% to 8.3 mln tons, nearly six times the country’s domestic production. The United States is expected to remain the main supplier, accounting for more than 95% of total imports.

Colombia’s milled rice production is also forecast to decline by 6.7% to 1.8 mln tons in 2026/27. The main factors are the impact of El Niño and declining farmgate prices since late 2024, which have discouraged farmers from expanding planted areas. Meanwhile, domestic rice consumption is expected to increase slightly to 2.03 mln tons, supported by a gradual economic recovery and population growth.

Against this backdrop, Colombia’s rice imports are forecast to reach 240 thsd tons, up 122% from the previous season. The increase will be supported by lower domestic production, competitive international prices and the appreciation of the Colombian peso, which makes imported products more affordable for local buyers.

According to FAS USDA, US exporters could also strengthen their position in Colombia’s rice market thanks to competitive prices and ongoing trade disputes between Colombia and Ecuador. Overall, declining corn and rice production will increase the country’s dependence on imports, while low crop profitability and weather-related risks will remain major constraints on domestic production growth.
