China’s potato sector, one of the largest in the world, is set for a major transformation as Syngenta Group China, McDonald’s China, and McCain China signed an agreement to build a sustainable and digitalized supply chain for French fries. The initiative aims to integrate farming, processing, and distribution into a fully traceable and coordinated system.

China produces around 95 million tonnes of potatoes annually and is the global leader in terms of cultivation area, with about 4.7 million hectares planted. However, the sector remains highly fragmented, with more than 18 million households growing potatoes on very small plots averaging just 0.67 hectares, limiting efficiency and modernization.

The industry also faces structural challenges, including rising labour costs, soil degradation, low mechanization levels, and increasing climate risks. Weak pest and disease control systems further constrain productivity and prevent the sector from reaching its full potential.

As part of the new initiative, the partners will introduce regenerative farming practices through Syngenta’s MAP platform, along with digital monitoring across the entire production cycle—from planting to harvest. This will ensure full traceability, improved quality control, and more stable supply for processors and end buyers.

The model is expected to create a predictable value chain where farmers gain access to advanced technologies, seeds, and fertilizers, while also securing long-term demand through McDonald’s and McCain. The initiative marks a step toward modernizing China’s potato industry and strengthening its efficiency amid rising global demand for processed potato products.
