Chile’s blueberry exports to rise for third consecutive year on new varieties
Chile’s fresh blueberry exports are forecast to increase by 2% in the 2026/27 season to 95.1 thsd tons. According to the Frutas de Chile Blueberry Committee, the main growth driver will be new varieties, shipments of which are expected to rise by 39% to 30.3 thsd tons.
New varieties are expected to account for around 32% of total exports. At the same time, shipments of traditional varieties could decline by 9% to 64.8 thsd tons. Industry representatives note that newer varieties retain firmness, flavor and freshness better during transportation.
The export peak is expected from late November through mid-January, when weekly shipments could exceed 8 thsd tons. The current forecast already takes into account the impact of El Niño, including October rains and localized hail, although the effect on production is currently assessed as limited.
Europe has strengthened its position as the leading destination for Chilean blueberries, taking around half of total exports. Shipments to the region increased by 20% year on year. Meanwhile, Chilean blueberries face an additional 12.5% duty in the United States, although exports of organic berries to the US increased by 12% last season and accounted for almost 39% of Chile’s total shipments to the market.
Lower supplies from Peru could create additional opportunities for Chilean exporters. At the same time, strong demand from processors provides an alternative outlet for traditional varieties. The industry expects varietal renewal, growth of the organic segment and market diversification to continue supporting Chile’s competitiveness.
