Canada’s canola planting gains momentum but still trails last year’s pace
Canadian farmers have significantly accelerated canola planting thanks to improved weather conditions, although the sowing campaign remains behind last year’s schedule. As of early June, approximately 73% of the planned canola acreage had been planted nationwide.
The strongest progress has been recorded in Saskatchewan, where fieldwork resumed at a rapid pace after weather-related delays earlier this spring. As a result, the gap with last year’s planting progress has narrowed considerably since late May, though farmers have not yet fully caught up.
Despite the slower planting pace, crop conditions are notably better than a year ago. In Saskatchewan, the vast majority of canola fields are rated in good to excellent condition, providing favorable prospects for yield development and supporting optimistic expectations for Canada’s 2026 canola harvest.
