Bunge invests €4.4 mln to expand soybean processing in Italy

Bunge Global has invested €4.4 mln in upgrading its Porto Corsini facility near Ravenna, Italy. The modernization will double the plant’s soybean receiving and processing capacity, with the upgraded facility expected to become fully operational by the end of the summer, ahead of the new harvest season.

The project includes a modern seed receiving system, expanded storage capacity, and an upgraded in-house laboratory for faster and more accurate quality testing. Bunge also installed a new truck unloading station and improved the internal seed handling system to increase the efficiency of soybean processing.

According to the company, the investment will enable higher purchases of soybeans grown in Italy’s main agricultural regions, including Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Piedmont, Lombardy, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The soybeans will be processed into vegetable oil, soybean meal for the feed industry, and feedstocks for biofuel production.

Bunge also expects the expansion to strengthen Ravenna’s role as a key logistics hub connecting Italian farmers with customers across Italy and the rest of Europe. The company said the investment will help improve Italy’s food security while ensuring stable supplies of raw materials for the food, feed, and fuel industries.

Italy remains the European Union’s largest soybean producer. According to EU forecasts, the country is expected to harvest about 848 thsd tons of soybeans in 2026 after recording crops of more than 1 mln tons for three consecutive years. Bunge is one of Southern Europe’s largest biodiesel producers, processing soybeans into vegetable oil, soybean meal, and biofuels.
