Bulgarian farmers expect smaller wheat harvest in 2026

Grain producers in Bulgaria are forecasting a smaller wheat harvest in 2026 compared to last season. The main reasons include reduced planting areas, high production costs, and low grain selling prices. The statement was made by Iliya Prodanov, chairman of the National Association of Grain Producers of Bulgaria.

According to industry representatives, current soil moisture levels remain sufficient, while full reservoirs are providing a degree of stability for the agricultural sector. However, a cool spring and limited sunshine hours have slowed the development of spring crops, which could negatively affect yields.

Prodanov noted that the next 20–30 days will be crucial for determining both the quality and volume of the wheat harvest. He estimated that soft wheat acreage has declined by around 1.5–2 million decares this year, as some farmland was shifted to rapeseed, durum wheat, and other crops.

As a result, Bulgaria’s total wheat production could fall by 700,000 to 1 million tonnes compared to 2025. Producers say the issue is not only the size of the harvest but also weak profitability caused by low grain prices on international markets.

During a meeting with Bulgaria’s new agriculture minister, industry representatives also discussed agricultural policy, preparations for the EU’s new Common Agricultural Policy, and land reform issues. Key priorities for the sector include expanding cooperation between producers, modernizing irrigation systems, and adopting legislation on sectoral organizations.

Additional pressure on Bulgarian farmers is coming from tensions in the Middle East, which are contributing to higher fuel and fertilizer prices. According to Prodanov, fertilizer costs have nearly doubled in recent periods, significantly increasing production expenses and financial pressure on farmers.
