Brazil will produce less grain than last season – forecast
Brazil’s grain production will reach 299.27 million tons in the 2023-2024 harvest, according to a survey published by the National Supply Company (Conab), the online agricultural news platform AgroPages reported on July 15.
This number represents a 6.4% or 20.54 million tons decrease from the previous cycle, but still positions this crop as the second largest in the country. The field survey carried out at the end of June allowed us to say that there was an increase in the main crops, indicating a recovery in production, especially corn, sesame and second crop rice.
On the other hand, there was a decline in corn, beans, wheat, cotton and first crop soybeans. According to the analysis, this drop is mainly due to the intensity of the El Niño phenomenon.
Production is estimated at 147.34 million tons, down 4.7% or 7.27 million tons from the previous harvest. Corn production is estimated at 115.86 million tons, including all three harvests: a volume 12.2% or 16.03 million tons below the 2022-2023 harvest.
Meanwhile, the total planted area in the country increased by 1.5%, an increase of 1.21 million hectares compared to last season. The most significant increase was in soybean acreage at 1.94 million hectares.
Total corn acreage fell to 1.41 million hectares, followed by wheat and other winter crops. Winter crops currently being sown in Brazil include wheat, oats, rapeseed, rye, barley and triticale.
