Argentine producers fear a slowdown in the beef export boom
Argentina continues to increase its beef exports, but the current export boom may be short-lived due to political risks and structural problems in the industry. This was stated by Miguel Sciaritti, president of the Argentine Chamber of Meat Industry and Trade (CICCRA), commenting on the market situation.
According to him, in the first quarter of 2026, Argentine beef exports increased by 54%, and foreign exchange earnings reached a record $1 billion for this period. The main factors of this growth were the agreements between the presidents of the United States and Argentina, as well as the reduction in beef production in the United States due to adverse weather conditions, which increased demand for imported meat.
At the same time, Sciaritti warned that the current trade cooperation is unstable. According to him, the agreements are based mainly on political decisions of the current leaders and are not enshrined in a full-fledged intergovernmental agreement ratified by the parliaments of both countries. Therefore, the terms of trade can change at any moment.
An additional challenge for Argentine livestock production remains the consequences of extreme weather events. The drought of 2023 and the floods of 2024-2025 negatively affected the reproduction of the herd. Over the past three years, the country’s cattle population has decreased by about 6%, and the recovery of losses, according to industry estimates, will require at least five years, significant investments and government support.
Despite these difficulties, the domestic market is showing signs of recovery. Beef consumption in Argentina has increased by about 5% in recent months after a long period of decline, and the pace of price increases is gradually slowing. Among the measures to quickly increase production, experts cite increasing the average slaughter weight of cattle, which, according to CICCRA, could increase the total volume of beef production in the country by almost 20%.
