In 2024, beef consumption in Argentina will reach historically low levels, marking a new era in the country’s food culture. Argentines, accustomed to an abundance of steaks and barbecued asados, are facing challenges from the economic downturn, inflation and other factors leading to a decline in cattle meat consumption.

According to a report from the Rosario exchange, each person in Argentina is expected to consume approximately 44.8 kilograms of beef in 2024, the lowest since 1914. This is a consequence of the severe economic difficulties faced by the country. Libertarian President Javier Mealey is implementing harsh austerity measures to stabilize the situation, including the lifting of the beef price freeze imposed by the previous government.

The decline in beef consumption is encouraging Argentines to turn their attention to more affordable alternatives such as chicken and pork. The price of 1 kg of beef in 2024 is projected to be equivalent to the price of 2 kg of alternative meat. This change in consumer behavior is not only due to economic factors, but also due to the changing preferences and taste preferences of the population.

Despite the decrease in meat consumption in general, farmers face the challenges of adapting to new market conditions. With a decreasing demand in the domestic market, they are forced to find new strategies and solutions to maintain the sustainability of their farms. Changes in beef consumption in Argentina reflect not only economic shifts, but also changing consumer preferences and priorities. This necessitates adaptation for both consumers and meat producers, opening up new perspectives and challenges for the country’s food industry.
