Argentina becomes the first country to approve new GM corn technology

Argentina has become the first country in the world to approve the commercial use of a new genetically modified corn hybrid designed to resist a range of lepidopteran pests. The decision was issued by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Ministry of Economy and formalized under Resolution No. 80/2026.

The main goal of the new technology is to provide farmers with additional tools to effectively control pests that reduce corn yields, while ensuring stable productivity of the crop across the country.

The approval followed a comprehensive regulatory assessment by relevant authorities. The National Advisory Commission on Agricultural Biotechnology (CONABIA) evaluated the agroecological and biological safety of the technology, while the National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality (SENASA) assessed its safety for human and animal consumption. The potential impact on Argentina’s export capacity was also reviewed.

The regulatory approval process took less than six months, which the government views as evidence of the country’s priority focus on the adoption of innovative agricultural biotechnology. This approach is part of Argentina’s broader strategy to enhance competitiveness in global agricultural markets.

Argentina has been one of the world’s leading hubs for agricultural biotechnology for more than 30 years. The new decision further strengthens its position as a regional leader and a key global center for agri-food innovation.
