Angola continues to import corn despite increased production
Angola’s corn production in the 2024/2025 marketing year reached 3.6 million tonnes, but the country still had to import an additional 350,000 tonnes of the grain, worth about $123 million, the Angolan government said. The need for external purchases remains high due to growing domestic demand for corn for human and animal feed and insufficient self-sufficiency in the national market.
The government is trying to bring producers and processors closer together, as local farmers sometimes cannot sell their entire harvest, while processors complain of a shortage of raw materials. According to the Association of Corn Flour Producers, about 30% of the needs are met from local production, the rest from imports. The main areas with the highest quality corn are the corridor between the provinces of Malanje and Cuanza Norte, as well as southern regions such as Huambo and Benguela. Challenges such as access to foreign exchange to finance imports, poor road conditions, and high transportation costs also hinder the wider use of local grains.
