American mill will buy wheat from Argentina because it is cheaper than local
Argentina has agreed to sell wheat to the United States — to Florida, a destination historically considered unlikely for Argentine grain. This is reported by La Nation.
Against the backdrop of a large supply and competitive prices, Argentine wheat was able to enter this attractive market mainly due to price. According to market sources, it is about 40 thousand tons of wheat.
“The main reason is price. Our wheat is very cheap now — a little more than $ 200 per ton. In the southeastern region of the United States (Florida), wheat is expensive due to logistics, so it is more profitable for the importer to buy it in Argentina than from domestic suppliers,” said grain market analyst Javier Preciado Patiño.
According to the publication, the destination is the Ardent Mills mill in Tampa (Florida) — a company specially adapted for wheat imports. This is not the first time: 30,000 tonnes were already shipped in April 2025, but this was not publicly reported at the time.
In Kansas, US HRW (Hard Red Winter) wheat was trading at around $280-287/t.
Industry sources called the deal “the big news of the day,” noting that it was made as a replacement for hard red wheat (HRW). Argentine wheat competed with traditional US HRW in a market where internal logistics often increase the final cost.
Argentine wheat is quoted at $210-220/t FOB, plus $35-40/t freight and a 10-15% duty. This gives a final price at the destination of $269.5-299/t. In comparison, US HRW is $280-287/t.
Under these circumstances, imports make economic sense. At the same time, market participants warn that if price dynamics change, this could only be a one-off delivery.
Despite the specific nature of the deal, the export sector sees it in a broader context. Argentina has an exceptionally large volume of wheat, mostly low-protein, which is often used as feed.
