ADM to expand US soybean crushing capacity by 700 thsd tons

U.S.-based ADM has announced plans to expand the capacity of four soybean crushing plants, adding approximately 700 thsd tons of annual soybean processing capacity. The investment is driven by rapidly growing demand for soybean oil used in the production of renewable diesel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

According to the company, the expansion reflects a new stage in the development of the U.S. agricultural sector, where soybeans are increasingly viewed not only as a source of high-protein soybean meal but also as a key feedstock for low-carbon fuels. At the same time, strong demand for soybean meal from the livestock sector continues to enhance the economics of soybean processing.

Analysts note that modern farming systems are increasingly built on the complementary relationship between corn and soybeans rather than competition between the two crops. Soybeans naturally fix nitrogen, reducing fertilizer requirements for the following corn crop, while corn provides feedstock for ethanol production as well as Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS), one of the world’s most valuable high-protein livestock feeds. Together, the two crops create an efficient system for producing food, feed and renewable fuels.

Brazil is a leading example of this integrated approach, widely using a soybean–second corn crop production system. This allows farmers to maximize land use, increase grain output and expand corn ethanol production without significantly increasing planted area.

Against the backdrop of the global transition to a low-carbon economy, ADM’s investment highlights that the future of agriculture is increasingly about combining food and fuel production rather than choosing between them. Expanding soybean processing creates new opportunities for producers while simultaneously supporting the production of food, feed, renewable fuels and other value-added products.
