ADM expands US oilseed crushing capacity to meet biofuel demand

ADM (Archer-Daniels-Midland) has announced a capital investment program that will expand its North American oilseed crushing capacity by approximately 700 thsd tons per year. The expansion is driven by strong demand for vegetable oils and renewable fuel feedstocks, supported by U.S. federal biofuel policies.

Rather than building new processing plants, the company will modernize and expand existing facilities. The investments include debottlenecking operations, upgrading equipment, and expanding storage capacity at four plants in Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, and North Dakota. The projects are scheduled for completion between mid-2028 and early 2029.

The upgrades will improve conveying, extraction, and processing systems, expand meal storage capacity, and optimize plant operations. According to ADM, the projects will generate additional demand for more than 25 mln bushels of U.S. oilseed crops each year.

ADM said upgrading existing facilities allows the company to deploy capital more efficiently while maintaining supply chain flexibility. It is also evaluating similar expansion projects across other oilseed processing assets in its North American network.

The investments come as U.S. crushers continue expanding capacity to keep pace with growing soybean oil demand for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), one of the fastest-growing segments of the country’s oilseed processing industry.
